Lieberman Retains Chairmanship

Is there a lawmaker in Washington less inept than Harry Reid?

Despite Reid’s admonishment of Lieberman, Democrat senators just voted 42-13 to let Joe Lieberman retain the chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.  The much-maligned Lieberman has essentially been ostracized by the party two years ago after his support for the Iraq war displeased many in the Democrat caucus.  But it was his ardent support of John McCain during this year’s presidential campaign which infuriated the leadership in both houses of Congress and across the Beltway and blogosphere, as well.

The vote today shows that there is at least some modicum of common sense left in the Democrat caucus, and not every Senator is buying into the radial, leftist realignment that was supposedly determined from this month’s general election and screamed about by the mainstream media and leftist blogosphere.   Either that, or Reid and company realize that they will need as many votes as they can get.

But today’s vote puts Democrats and their “mandate of change” in an interesting light.  Is the party really as unified as they claim?  What happened to leftward progress allegedly demanded by the electorate two weeks ago?  With the Obama transition marching leftward, these developments might cause a few problems in 2009.
